The INSIDER - Fall 2022

Dr. Dietra Trent visited Texas College on August 28 as the new Executive Director of The White House and U.S. Department of Education Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities (WHI - HBCUs). She is an HBCU graduate and Virginia’s former Secretary of Education. Dr. Trent’s visit served to initiate dialogue with President Fennell and Texas College administrators regarding the achievements of scholars, campus organization leaders, and faculty. During her visit, discussions were focused on ‘The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ as the most important entity for HBCUs to gain access to federal resources, including Title III, student aid, as well as grants and contracts from over 30 federal agencies. Tammi Fergusson, Intergovernmental Relations Coordinator for WHI - HBCUs, accompanied Dr. Trent on the visit. The Academic Affairs unit continues to work diligently to create a collaborative approach to student achievement between faculty and student services by forming an effective system of intervention to improve overall Texas College student retention and completion.
