FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friend of Texas College:
We are now in another special season in the life of Texas College—the 130th anniversary. The date of January 9, 2024, is reflective of the College’s existence for more than a century in the same location of her founding. The date also speaks of untold numbers of individuals who have graced her campus, walked her hallowed halls, and launched careers into the next stages of their lives. But as we celebrate a storied history, has Texas College truly pushed to her potential? Or, have we chosen to settle for less than greatness? To this end, we have begun the “Texas College Futures Campaign.” The campaign observes the 130th anniversary, but also focuses on raising at least $10 million for the benefit of: 1. Student scholarships to recruit, reward, and retain quality students 2. Sustain campus enhancement and viability - maintain buildings, facilities, and grounds 3. Expand infrastructure, technology, and deferred maintenance Why a campaign and why now? As the oldest institution of higher education in the City of Tyler, now is the time to move to the next level together. Texas College has accomplished much to prepare and educate students, but I am confident we can make greater strides for their future and the future of the College through the success of this campaign. I am pleased to share that the “Texas College Futures Campaign” has received the endorsement of the Texas College Alumni and Ex-Students Association with contributions and a pledge toward $1 million of the goal, but more funds are needed. Please consider being a partner in the “Texas College Futures Campaign” as follows:
1. $130,000 - Diamond Partner 2. $13,000 - Gold Partner 3. $1,300 - Silver Partner 4. $130 - Bronze Partner
Please note that no contribution is too small or large. Please also note that all contributions are tax deductible with an acknowledgement letter from the College. Thank you in advance for your support. To make your campaign gift online, visit www.texascollege.edu/give ; to make your gift by mail, please send to Texas College, Office of the President, 2404 N. Grand Ave., Tyler, TX 75702.
Warmest regards, Dwight J. Fennell, Ph.D. President

ELEVATING ACADEMICS THROUGH ALPHA CHI Earlier this year, Texas College was accepted by the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society, one of the top national honor societies in the country. The College’s acceptance yielded the chartering of the Texas Beta Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi, Chapter 409 in Region II, Texas College’s chapter. To formally commemorate the chartering, the College hosted the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society, Texas Beta Beta Chapter Inaugural Induction Ceremony. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, October 29, in the Martin Hall Auditorium. With an array of symbolically colored candles positioned in ornate candelabra and the platform robed in academic regalia, the atmosphere undoubtedly exuded academic formality, excellence, significance, and symbolism. The aforementioned was amplified with the procession of candidates for induction, which entailed ritualistic lighting of candles, repeated membership affirmations, and signing of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society Constitution. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ALPHA CHI ON CAMPUS Texas College is excited and eager to offer this opportunity to students. The Alpha Chi National College Honor Society recognizes exceptional student scholars and unites them around one goal—channeling creativity and curiosity into scholarship that serves the greater good. Alpha Chi's mission, in part, is to broaden members' collegiate experience by: Encouraging student creativity and research; Fostering excellence and service in action; Promoting personal growth through diversity; Equipping compassionate listeners and leaders; Providing a path for academic and professional mentoring; and Exemplifying how to make scholarship effective for good.
Alpha Chi also offers students a rich source for scholarships and financial awards, with many grants, scholarships, fellowships, awards, and travel stipends to support undergraduate scholarship. Students participating in the courses benefit from exposure to the professional preparation of esports and competitive gaming. "I am ecstatic about our esports initiative and the investment we have made into the program,” commented President Dwight J. Fennell. “It offers another extraordinary opportunity for the College to be on the cutting edge and uniquely connect with our students. And, the partnership allows students to build their future career brand in the marketplace with potential employers." Collectively, the esports initiative emphasizes competition and student team play, which affords many benefits of traditional athletics, such as sportsmanship, leadership, communication, and teamwork, as well as academic offerings, such as micro credentialing, to forge career pathways for students.

DR. QUAZI IDENTIFIES NEW MECHANISM FOR PAIN PATHWAY PAGE 15| THE INSIDER
Dr. Sohel Quazi, Assistant Professor of Biology, recently published an article titled "TLR4 Induced TRPM2 Mediated Neuropathic Pain," in the peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Pharmacology. Through collaboration with The University of Texas at Tyler’s Fisch College of Pharmacy, the research team has successfully identified a new mechanism for pain pathway. In essence, the research from Dr. Quazi and his colleagues explores how neuropathic pain is linked to transient receptor potential channel Melastatin 2 (TRPM2), a calcium channel activated by Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). It delves into the mechanisms of pain development, emphasizing how TRPM2 modulates oxidative stress and inflammation in neurons, contributing to persistent pain. The study suggests that targeting TRPM2 may present new therapeutic opportunities for managing neuropathic pain.
MECHANISM OF TLR4 INDUCED TRPM2 MEDIATED NEUROPATHIC PAIN, DESIGNED BY DR. QUAZI
Summarily, the new mechanism for pain pathway is important because it addresses the question of how to stop neuropathic pain by blocking the pathway and, in turn, stopping pain. While the role of TRPM2 ion channels and their association with Toll-like receptors in pain management needs to be studied in more detail for the development of effective strategies to treat neuropathic pain, a next step could be the development of a drug. Dr. Quazi's full published article can be accessed by visiting the Frontiers in Pharmacology website (www.frontiersin.org).

KEEPERS OF THE FLAME
Former presidential portraits included: President W.R. Banks (1915-1926); President D.R. Glass (1931-1961); President Haywood L. Strickland (1994 2000); and President William C. Hawkins (2000-2007). The unveiling congruently included portraits of current President Dwight J. Fennell and current Board Chairman Lawrence Reddick III. While the project focuses on the aforementioned collection of portraits, it also entails the building and digitization of the Texas College archive collection to establish archival safeguards to ensure the College’s history remains preserved for future generations. The portrait unveiling ceremony supported this digitization initiative, as it likewise served as the first opportunity to collect and digitize primary archival materials, such as Texas College documents, correspondence, photographs, yearbooks, and paraphernalia, from alumni to create a unique digital collection for scholarly and stakeholder use. The “Keepers of the Flame” project is overseen by Ms. Linda Simmons-Henry, Director of Library Services.

KIM BURRELL MENTORS CHOIR
NATIONAL RECORDING ARTIST KIM BURRELL JOINS THE STAGE WITH THE TEXAS COLLEGE CHOIR AT "BRING THE CHOIR BACK 2024" AT NEW LIFE COMMUNITY CHURCH IN TYLER, TEXAS
To culminate the 2024 Choir Camp, the Texas College Choir hosted their annual concert, "Bring the Choir Back 2024," on Thursday, August 15, at New Life Community Church in Tyler, Texas. This year's performance included special guest national recording artist Kim Burrell. The concert, which garnered a standing room only audience, graced the ears of all present as the Texas College Choir performed a multitude of invigorating selections themselves, as well as powerful performances alongside Burrell. In addition to the opportunity to perform with Kim Burrell, the Texas College Choir was also afforded invaluable wisdom and mentorship from her. Prior to the concert, Kim Burrell graced the Choir Room with her presence to speak with the Texas College Choir, offering insights from her undoubtedly decorated career and providing words of encouragement for the
students, as well as a question and answer session for the Choir members. "Our session with her prior to the concert was amazing," said Jared Shears, member of the Texas College Choir. "She explained her musical processes, how to deliver our songs, how to communicate, and how to navigate the creation and delivery of music. To have someone of that level and stature pour into us is priceless." "Kim Burrell is, without a doubt, one of the best in the industry; not just gospel, but the music industry in general," commented Charles Shaw, Choir Director. "Her being here is important to our Choir to elevate and enhance them to a level that they would have never expected.”

Shaw continued his sentiments, noting “Bringing a national artist like her provides our students an injection of confidence to perform their best. Essentially, it shows that the Texas College Choir is on a level that is good enough to perform with the likes of Kim Burrell and other national recording artists—and we are.” "With Kim Burrell joining us as a special guest, as well as her mentorship, it gives the Choir a different and elevated level of exposure," noted Shears. "With the platform that she is on, her presence alone opens a lot of doors for us and inspires us for where we can go in the future." While the Texas College Choir was undoubtedly excited to host and learn from Kim Burrell, the feeling was reciprocated by the national recording artist. “I am excited to be here at Texas College,” commented Burrell. “Pouring into the youth, the Texas College students, is vital and important.” She continued this sentiment, “HBCUs are important. And, that’s why I am happy to be here and joining alongside the Texas College Choir for an amazing concert.” During her discussion with the Texas College Choir, Burrell hinted at a few upcoming partnership opportunities between herself and the Choir. Moreover, Burrell alluded that she would be back on the Texas College campus for more exciting collaborative projects.

TEXAS COLLEGE EMPHASIZES VOTING IMPORTANCE
VOTE COMMON GOOD'S REV. DR. MICHAEL WATERS SPEAKS AT THE "THE POP UP & POP OUT VOTER EXPERIENCE" VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE AT THE TEXAS COLLEGE CAMPUS
Texas College continues to emphasize the importance of exercising the right to vote through "The Pop Up & Pop Out Voter Experience" voter registration drive. To elevate the activity and create a more engaging atmosphere, the College collaborated with Vote Common Good, a faith-based national touring organization that focuses on inspiring, energizing, and mobilizing people of faith to register to vote and, congruently, encouraging voters to make the common good their voting criteria, instead of self-interest or partisan interest alone. The activity undoubtedly inspired and energized the Texas College Family for the 2024 election. The drive began with an impactful speech from Rev. Dr. Michael PAGE 35| THE INSIDER
Waters, Vote for Common Good representative, which emphasized the importance of the election, as well as highlighted historical contexts to illustrate why individuals must exercise their right to vote. Following Rev. Dr. Waters' presentation, President Dwight J. Fennell also made powerful remarks. Dr. Fennell echoed the sentiments of Rev. Dr. Waters and stressed the importance of an individual's vote, as well as emphasized that the election of a candidate directly impacts their day to-day lives in a multitude of ways, inclusive of their educational journeys and careers futuristically. Dr. Fennell congruently championed the concept of voting for the common good, contextualizing that an
In addition to the aforementioned, "The Pop Up & Pop Out Voter Experience" voter registration drive also included other engaging activities such as Greek strolls, line dancing, raffles, giveaways, worship, and more. The event, collectively, served as a platform to engage the Texas College Family to ensure they were registered to vote, as well as to inspire and energize the campus community for the 2024 election. Texas College's continued emphasis on voting is just one more way that the College embodies the core value of Social Responsibility.
individual's vote directly affects others and either supports or undermines another’s needs, making reference to students' parents, grandparents, peers, and others. Following the remarks from Rev. Dr. Waters and Dr. Fennell, individuals were encouraged to sign the Vote for Common Good bus, a Vote for Common Good tradition throughout their tour that signifies an individual's pledge to vote in the 2024 election. The event continued with a live DJ, as well as performances from the Texas College Band and the Texas College Cheerleaders while individuals registered to vote and received voting information. CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE
didn’t exist and instead was rampant with ruthless exclusionary practices, Texas College understands the importance of embracing cultural diversity. Born out of the need to provide a safe and quality education for a people once considered disenfranchised—to serve a population ostracized from advancement and opportunity—Texas College was founded to serve all. And, 130 years later, Texas College remains true to this founding principle with open doors to all individuals in pursuit of an education. While Texas College maintains the HBCU designation, as defined by the Higher Education Act of 1965, the College fully embraces a culturally and ethnically diversified campus, as evidenced by the diverse student, faculty, and staff population at Texas College. In fact, the College’s second largest student population, in terms of ethnicity, are Hispanic and Latino students. Historically, Hispanic and Latino students have held and continue to hold important roles on the College’s campus, inclusive of positions such as Miss Texas College and Valedictorian. Students, and congruently faculty and staff, of Hispanic and Latino descent are vital to Texas College’s population, creating a diverse learning atmosphere for all to engage. Throughout the month, Texas College hosted activities that spotlighted the achievements, influences, and profound impact of Hispanic and Latino individuals to afford the campus an opportunity to explore, recognize, and embrace the rich diversity, cultures, and significant contributions of Hispanic and Latino American communities.
With the annual opportunity to celebrate the month-long acknowledgement that is National Hispanic Heritage Month, or Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana in Spanish, Texas College emphasizes that the observance is one of great significance not only for the College, but for the broader society at large. National Hispanic Heritage Month is important, as it provides a 30-day period to further emphasize the context of the substantial and meaningful contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Moreover, it showcases, both historically and factually, how individuals of Hispanic and Latino descent are interwoven into the fabric of America, having held significant roles throughout the United States’ history, dating back to the American Revolution and the country’s very birth. As a Historically Black College (HBCU), founded less than three decades after the Civil War amid an era where diversity

STEERS SECURE SIX
THE TEXAS COLLEGE STEER FOOTBALL TEAM ENTERS CLYDE-PERKINS STADIUM FOR THEIR HOME OPENER AGAINST WESTGATE CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY IN TYLER, TEXAS
Texas College Steer Football has “turned the corner” this season. Currently sitting at 6-3, the Steers continue to emerge victorious. The 2024 season began in Fayette, Missouri, to face off against the Central Methodist University Eagles at Davis Field, in which they secured a 26-15 season opening win. The Steers would remain undefeated after their week two game with a decisive 54-3 win at home against Westgate Christian University. However, they evened out the win-loss column, dropping the next two games on the road against Ottawa University Arizona and Langston University. However, the Steers would not allow those losses to deter them, winning the following game against North American University (NAU) 25-21.
Texas College’s win against NAU initiated an exciting four-game win streak, defeating Arkansas Baptist College at Homecoming, followed by a nail-biting 40-34 overtime win on the road against Louisiana Christian University, and then another victory at home against Oklahoma Panhandle State University, which secured their sixth win on the season. This win is notable, as it cements their first above .500 season in recent years. The Steers recently fell to Texas Wesleyan, but have two games remaining with plans to finish the season victorious.
