Dr. Dwight J. Fennell

Dear Alumni and Friends: We are pleased to provide you with this edition of the INSIDER Magazine. For Texas College, the INSIDER serves as a way of providing news events that are germane to former and planned events of the College. In this regard, we remain excited about the things that have occurred during the Fall 2022 academic term and are equally excited about what is projected before us for Spring 2023. For example, the College has again successfully completed the Fifth Year Interim Report with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). This action purports that the institution maintains its accreditation status through 2026. Further, for 2022 the College has maintained her accreditation status with the Texas Education Agency (TEA). This purports that great opportunities exist for students enrolled in any of the eight Educational Preparation Programs (EPP), offered by the Division of Education. The College is now pursuing accreditation in the major of Social Work. To this end, approval of Bench Mark I, of a three - phase process has taken place by the accrediting body, Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). It should also be noted that with all that has occurred with COVID - 19 and the varying mutations, the administration for 2022 - 2023 continues to plan for face - to - face instruction. Notwithstanding, the administration will continue to monitor aspects of the pandemic and make the necessary adjustments as needed. We will keep our stakeholders updated and informed via the College’s website as well as public relations resources like “The Beacon Newsletter” and the “INSIDER.” I pray that you will enjoy this edition of the INSIDER Magazine. You are also encouraged to share it with others. Thank you for your continued support of Texas College. Sincerely, Dwight J. Fennell President

The site, which opened on July 26, 2022, is the first site of the study; the next will be Dallas. “After several delays due to the COVID - 19 pandemic, we are thrilled that our Tyler site is up and running,” said Camille Gibson, Interim Dean of PVAMU’s College of Juvenile Justice and Executive Director of TJCPC. “Our regional sites for the Texas Child and Family initiative allow us to partner with Texas College and surrounding communities to help empower youth and families to work together to reduce juvenile delinquency in Texas.” On several occasions, Program Director and Dr. Terrance Allen has visited the Texas College campus to build relationships with the Division of Business and Social Sciences to provide opportunities for students majoring in the areas of Criminal Justice and Social Work. Opportunities available to participate with the program were featured on September 7 during the College’s Weekly Academic Symposium. The Texas Child and Family Study is a multilevel pilot project of the TJCPC. DR. QUAZI SERVES AS NSF PRESENTER & PANELIST

Dr. Sohel Quazi (right) presents at the 2022 NSF Campus Cyberinfrastructure PI Workshop in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) hosted the 2022 Campus Cyberinfrastructure Principal Investigator (PI) Workshop in Minneapolis, Minnesota from September 19 through September 21. Among the list of renowned scholars presenting at the conference was Texas College’s Sohel Quazi, PhD, Division of Natural and

Computational Sciences Assistant Professor. His presentation to this academic community surrounded the current work on his recently awarded $100,000 NSF Planning Grant titled “Re - constructing the Campus Cyberinfrastructure of a Small, Liberal Arts HBCU in Order to Maximize STEM Innovation and Integration.” Through this grant, Dr. Quazi aims to enhance the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) throughout the Texas College campus, as well as across disciplines, to maximize outcomes in the preparation of students for entry into, and excellence in performance, in STEM graduate and professional programs. Texas College is currently utilizing the planning grant to complete an assessment of its current infrastructure in order to identify the elements needed to reconstruct the system to better accommodate the delivery of STEM and liberal arts subject matter, which allows for research that will propel Texas College students to excel in STEM graduate programs. The broader impact of the grant will generate not merely information, but actual knowledge that can advance STEM achievement among the country’s 5,228 liberal arts colleges within the United States, including the ten liberal arts HBCUs.

Accordingly, the planning grant will serve as a pathway for the greater preparation of liberal arts students at HBCUs and other liberal arts colleges beyond Texas College. In addition to Dr. Quazi’s presentation, he was also invited to serve as a panelist for the Minority Serving Campus Cyberinfrastructure Consortium Panel Discussion. Collectively, his presentation and panel discussion intrigued the moderator, as well as his audience of peers, which garnered great interest in his return as a speaker for the 2023 conference. Aside from his own presentations, Dr. Quazi congruently garnered benefit from the conference and his peers. “This workshop provided a wealth of information about campus cyberinfrastructure,” noted Dr. Quazi. “Attending was fruitful to myself, as well to Texas College to best serve and deliver the mission of the institution.” TEA AWARDS CONTINUED ACCREDITATION

Prior to the opening of the Spring 2022 semester, the Texas College Educator Preparation Program (EPP) within the Division of Education received official notification of continued accreditation from the Texas Education Agency (TEA). TEA serves as the state agency that oversees both primary and secondary public education within the state of Texas, as well as Educator Preparation Programs at colleges and universities. The status of “accredited” was granted following a rigorous program review of Texas College’s Division of Education. The Division met several standards, including program impact, candidate quality, proficiency in content and pedagogical knowledge, recruitment, and selectivity. The accreditation remains in effect until the next five - year review.

This achievement provides Texas College faculty members with the specialized framework that accelerates educator preparation programs to continually self - assess and conduct evidence - based analysis of their programs and their efficacy. Reaching this evidence - based capstone, rooted in continuous improvement, will ensure that Texas College will produce successful educators.

SOCIAL WORK PROGRAM CONTINUES TO TREK TOWARD PROGRAM ACCREDITATION

The Texas College Social Work program, within the Division of Business and Social Sciences, has made strides in meeting accreditation requirements for the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE), which the is

the national association representing social work education in the United States. Texas College has received approval and acceptance of Benchmark I in the three - part accreditation process. Texas College has progressed to Benchmark II, which will be followed by a visit from the CSWE Commissioner. The Social Work Program has also selected key members of the community to develop a Texas College Community Advisory Board for the program, as well as continue to seek other opportunities to form community alliances. The accreditation of the Social Work Program will provide a substantial benefit to students and graduates. The CSWE accreditation will position graduates of the program to be more marketable applicants within the field, as well as earn higher salaries and wages. Once the full accreditation process is complete, graduates henceforth will not be the only individuals to carry the program’s mark of accreditation. Retroactively, Spring 2022 graduates, as well as students enrolled in the program since Fall 2021, will also get the benefit of graduating from an accredited program. Providing leadership for these efforts are faculty members Charlotte Sanders and LaKeshia Harris. Sanders, who serves as the Program Director and Assistant Professor, brings 30 years of real - world social work experience to the program. Most recently serving at Rusk State Hospital in Rusk, Texas, Sanders has also served in a multitude of capacities within the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. In addition to her service within the field of social work, Sanders also carries over a decade of teaching experience, serving as a professor at both Stephen F. Austin State University and Jarvis Christian College, now Jarvis Christian University. Harris, who serves as the Field Director and Assistant Professor, additionally brings over a decade of real - world experience to the Social Work program. Most recently, Harris served as the Director of Alinea Family Hospice in Longview, Texas. Moreover, Harris also carries over a decade of teaching experience, serving as a field instructor at Stephen F. Austin State University. In addition to the aforementioned, Harris also has extensive scholarship experience with multiple conference presentations and the facilitation of other educational trainings.

RENOVATION OF THE D.R. GLASS LIBRARY

The D.R. Glass Library undergoing renovations.

The D.R. Glass Library, constructed in 1948, stands as a structural staple to the Texas College campus, and even holds the designation as a historic landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. Now, in 2022, renovations to the historic D.R. Glass Library are currently underway. The library renovation project began in July 2022 and is scheduled for completion by the end of the Spring 2023 semester. The D.R. Glass Library’s renovation will include: · Upgraded and handicap accessible restrooms. · State of the art lighting, electrical wiring, internet capabilities and accessibility. · A new roof. · An updated drainage system.

To address student needs for library services during the renovation process, Texas College placed several “library kiosks” throughout the campus. Students are able to access pertinent library data by use of these kiosks. Additionally, students also have the option to access library services online through the Texas College website.

In addition to other funding sources, Texas College is utilizing a $500,000 grant from the Historic Preservation Fund for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant program, funded and administered by the National Park Service within the Department of Interior, to pay for the D.R. Glass Library renovation project. As one of 18 institutions awarded, Texas College was the only institution in Texas to receive this grant. 11 The D.R. Glass Library undergoing renovations.

THE TEXAS COLLEGE CHOIR RESOUNDINGLY RETURNS On Friday, August 19, at College Hill Missionary Baptist Church, music brought together an entire congregation. From wall to wall, over 1,000 individuals, supporters, and performers alike, were moved in a way that could only be described as incredible. In a myriad of voices, one feeling resonated above all – passion. As hands lifted to the skies in praise, one message was heard loud and clear: the Texas College Choir was back. Since the COVID - 19 pandemic, the Texas College Choir has sought ways to make a comeback. Now, with the appointment of Charles Shaw, the Choir has been launched into a new direction. Shaw, bringing a wealth of experience as a gospel music promoter, was hired as Texas College’s Choir Director in January of 2022. With extensive experience in marketing and advertising, he plans to build up not only the Choir’s prominence in East Texas, but that of Texas College as well. To begin this journey, he started with “Bring Back the Choir.” “Bring Back the Choir was not just an event, it’s a movement,” Shaw said. This introductory performance afforded a glimpse into what the future holds for the Texas College Choir, announcing and promoting to the public that exciting changes are coming. Exciting, indeed. “Bring Back the Choir” featured national gospel recording artists Vincent Tharpe and Kenosis, as well as Zacardi Cortez as musical guests. In addition to the Texas College Choir’s own performance, the Choir also backed up national gospel recording artist Kelontae Gavin, a show of what the next generation truly has to offer. Since their initial concert in August, the Texas College Choir has hosted two additional events not to be missed, “Fight to Win” and “Gospel Explosion.” “Fight to Win” was an evening of music dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness Month that featured national recording artist Crystal Aikin. Then, remaining committed to the College’s faith - based founding, the Texas College Choir celebrated Homecoming 2022 with the “Gospel Explosion,” an evening of worship through gospel music that featured national recording gospel artist Earnest Pugh, as well as a special word delivered by Dr. Jamal Bryant, Pastor of New Birth Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The Texas College Choir is comprised of students of all classifications, and carries a strong mix of low, hearty bass accompanied by the crisp grace of soprano singers. In each performance, the audience audibly experienced these voices in full effect. “The next generation of musicians and singers are influenced and affected by something new, not something that is sitting still,” Shaw commented. “What’s to come will take the Texas College Choir to new heights.” The Choir’s next event, “A Christmas to Remember,” is scheduled for Monday, December 5, at 6:00 P.M. at the Plaza Tower in Tyler, featuring national recording artist Jessica Reedy. Admission is free.

NEW LEADERSHIP STEERS ATHLETICS FORWARD Texas College places winning and graduating student - athletes at the forefront of institutional goals. With a commitment to these priorities, the Fall 2022 athletic season of competition served as a strong foundation toward revamping the department. In his first year at the helm, Athletic Director Randy Butler remains devoted and perseverant to his vision of rebuilding and overhauling Texas College Steer Athletics. “It’s not overnight, regrettably. It’s a process,” commented Butler as he discussed the Fall 2022 athletic season collectively. “We’re making progress, and we will continue to make progress — step by step and day by day — until we are where we need to be. That being said, this fall produced a lot of positives and a lot of steps toward where we want to be.” Those positives references are undoubtedly notable, spanning across a multitude of sports. After a three - year drought, Steer Football broke into the win column by defeating Lyon College. Led by freshman quarterback Isaiah Sadler and freshman wide receiver Terrell Hookfin, the Steers electrified the gridiron in an epic come - from - behind victory, which respectively earned each of them recognition as the top performer for the week throughout the state of Texas at all levels of college football. Sadler’s performance even garnered Sadler Player Of The Week honors from both the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) and Texas Football Life. Sadler finished the season ranked second in passing yards per game in all of NAIA; Hookfin finished third in receiving yards per game in all of NAIA. Their youth, coupled with an obvious connection on the field, seems to be something Steer Football fans can look forward to for the next three years. In addition to Sadler and Hookfin, the Steers collectively had over 15 student - athletes ranked within SAC’s top 25 players throughout a variety of offensive and defensive statistics. Both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams are off to a great start. Each scoring a string of victories early in the season, both teams foreshadow a promising and an exciting year for Steer Basketball. First - year Coach Selena Reyna, who took over the reigns of Steer Softball at the end of last season, successfully guided the program into the win column for the first time in 10 seasons. With a productive fall, Reyna looks to build on that success in the spring. The arrow for Steer Athletics is pointing north. With robust recruiting efforts underway, each of the Texas College athletic programs should experience a positive and competitive impact that is anticipated to help turn the corner for Steer Athletics. While concerted efforts are focused on performance on the field or court, congruent energies continue to be concentrated on ensuring success within the classroom as well to keep student - athletes on their trek toward degree attainment. “The academic aspect to all of this is the most important piece,” noted Butler. “That’s the entire reason they are here — to get an education and to receive their degree. At Texas College, we are building lifelong leaders devoted to learning and service long after they have crossed the stage.”
